da Vinci Visual Arts Capstone
My name is Violette, I am thirteen years old and an eighth grade student at da Vinci. I was born here in Portland and I have lived here my whole life. I live with my mom, my dad, my dog Nomar, and my two sisters, Thisby and Elizabeth, who are also both da Vinci students. My favorite colors are forest green, and teal. I love to read books, my favorite genre is fantasy. I hate horseradish and mustard, and I love mint chocolate chip ice cream and pickles. I am the only one in my family that’s left handed. I prefer Marvel over DC, and my favorite sport is baseball. One somewhat unique thing about me is that I am a triplet. My favorite sports team is the Minnesota Twins. You will probably never see me without a hat on. I prefer dogs rather than cats; one reason is because I am allergic to cats. Another is that dogs are amazing and way better. My sister Thisby and I are identical and my other sister, Elizabeth, is fraternal. Nomar is my first dog, and I’ve had him since kindergarten. Before him, the only pets I had were fish. My dad, several of my uncles on my dad’s side, and my sisters and I were all born in July.
My capstone theme is Fiber. The reason for this is because I enjoy working with all different types of fiber. Most of my pieces are finger knitted, it’s a somewhat simple process, but the end result is slightly more intricate. I also created a needle felted spider. Needle felting is the process of interlocking wool fibres by stabbing it with a barbed needle. The barbs catch the fibre and cause them to tangle and bind together. It’s not as complicated as it sounds; really you just stab fibers with a special needle until they stick together. Another piece I made was the dress, along with another student, Violet Gullung, which took us several months to complete. The theme for the spider and the dress was the elements (earth & water). The reason they have a different theme is because all capstone students had to create at least one project that was inspired by the elements. My favorite piece out of the artworks I made would have to be the larger white finger knitted scarf. It is my favorite because it is very soft and I really like the way it turned out.
